So much time is spent preparing for labor, but the postpartum period often gets overlooked. As a birth doula and childbirth educator, I see this all the time. And yet, postpartum is when families need the most support, clarity, and realistic expectations.

Postpartum planning isn’t about having everything figured out. It’s about creating a plan before you’re exhausted, healing, and adjusting to life with a newborn.

Why Postpartum Planning Matters

The weeks after birth involve physical recovery, major hormonal shifts, emotional adjustment, and sleep deprivation. Evidence shows that families do better when they plan for recovery, mental health support, feeding, and practical help ahead of time.

Postpartum planning helps families:

  • Understand what normal recovery looks like and when to seek care
  • Prepare for emotional changes like baby blues or postpartum mood disorders
  • Create flexible feeding plans without pressure or guilt
  • Feel more confident with newborn care and safe sleep
  • Line up real, practical support at home

Support Makes the Difference

One of the biggest predictors of a smoother postpartum experience is having support already in place. That includes meals, household help, clear visitor boundaries, and shared responsibility between partners.

Postpartum planning also reminds families of something important: healing takes time. Rest is medical care. Lowering expectations is protective. You are not meant to “bounce back.”

As I often tell clients, we’re not balls — we’re not bouncing anywhere.

A Resource to Help You Plan

To make this easier, I created a Postpartum Planning Guide that walks families through recovery, mental health, feeding, baby care, partner support, and emergency contacts in a clear, evidence-based way.

You Don’t Have to Do This Alone

Postpartum planning is one of the most powerful ways to care for yourself and your family. Whether you’re preparing for your first baby or your fourth, support matters.

If you’d like help creating a personalized postpartum plan or learning how doula support can help during pregnancy and beyond, I’d love to support you.
